Andrew J Allen

As an advocate of new music, saxophonist Andrew J Allen has premiered works by many young composers. Mr Allen has appeared with both the Bryan (Cookeville, TN) and Midland (MI) Symphony Orchestras, and has performed at conferences throughout the United States. As a founding member and baritone saxophonist of the Appalachian Quartet, Mr Allen was a quarterfinalist in both the 2008 and 2009 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competitions. He is an instructor for Tennessee Technological University's Southeast Chamber Music Institute.

Mr Allen holds the Bachelor of Music degree in instrumental music education from Tennessee Technological University and the Master of Music degree in performance from Central Michigan University where he studied with Phil Barham and John Nichol, respectively. He is currently a graduate teaching assistant and a Presidential Doctoral Fellow at the University of South Carolina, where he is a student of Dr Clifford Leaman. Mr Allen has pursued additional studies with Joseph Lulloff at the Brevard Music Center.

The composer and Mr. Allen met while both were in residence at the Brevard Music Center in the hills of North Carolina. In this setting, both musicians discussed their shared interest in jazz, contemporary music, and the interstices between the two. This work is the result of those early discussions.
