BRUSH|REED

Dr. Jennifer Bill saxophone
Linnea M. Doyle visual artist

from USA

BRUSH|REED is a collaboration between artist and musician to explore the parallels of painting and sound through live performance. BRUSH|REED engages an audience through color, pitch, representational lines, rhythm, intensity and expression: an auralvisual experience.

This collaboration between visual artist, Linnea, and saxophonist, Jennifer, uses painting and music to engage the audience in live art. Live art, as understood by Linnea and Jennifer, means art of that moment in time. The emotional excitement of a live performance for an audience member can rarely be matched. The visual and aural stimulation, the crowd, and the element of unpredictability of the performers all contribute to the power of live performance.

As far back as memory reaches there have always been pictures filling Linnea's brain and a crayon in her hand. Best known for her brightly colored and graphic style, Linnea M. Doyle is a Minneapolis based visual artist who regularly paints live on stage with musical acts across the city.

Boston based saxophonist, Dr. Jennifer Bill performs contemporary music with a variety of artists including painters, vocalists, clarinetists, cellists, flutists, taped media, percussionists and dancers. She is currently on faculty at Boston University, Providence College and The Boston Conservatory.

BUKU - Jacob Ter Veldhuis

The composer writes: "BUKU is based mainly on very short musical sound bytes: just a hit, a roll or a lick, from numerous jazz performances: moments of great energy and beauty. BUKU is about the soul of the alto saxophone and is a tribute to three alto giants: Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley and Art Pepper."

Wings - Joan Tower

The composer writes: "Wings (1981) was written for my friend and colleague Laura Flax. The image behind the piece is one of a large bird-perhaps a falcon-at times flying very high gliding along the thermal currents, barely moving. At other moments, the bird goes into elaborate flight patterns that loop around, diving downwards, gaining tremendous speeds."

The Seventh Healing Song of John Joseph (Blue) - James DeMars

The composer writes: "In the Southwest (USA) we recognize the impact of the Native American culture and its shared traditions with the ancient oriental cultures. The Healing Song is an artifact of my fascination with these oriental pioneers and particularly with those individuals who practice the mystical art of healing."

Night Bird - Karen Tanaka

The composer writes: "Night Bird is a love song filled with tender whispers of lovers. I have tried to weave colors and scent into the sound of alto saxophone and tape."

Phoenix - Alphonse Leduc

Phoenix is a work in the style of the Japanese Shakuhachi. A phoenix is a mythical bird that is a fire spirit. It has a 500 to 1000 year life-cycle. When it is time for the Phoenix's life to expire, it ignites fiercely in flames and is reduced to ashes, from which a new, young phoenix arises, reborn anew to live again.

Partita for solo flute, BWV 1013 - Allemande - Johann Sebastian Bach

The Partita in A survives in a version for solo flute, but it is not absolutely clear whether this is the original form in which Bach wrote it. The Partita consists of four movements in various dance styles. The opening Allemande, with its constant running sixteenth-notes, gives the impression more of a prelude than of a dance movement, with a well-shaped ascent to a climax and an artful descent afterwards.
