The Bunte/VanMatre Duo is a new ensemble dedicated to the commissioning and performing of new works which incorporate elements of improvisation and blurring the traditional lines between jazz and concert saxophone concepts.

Dr James Bunte is Associate Professor of Saxophone at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and an active recitalist, giving recitals and master classes throughout the United States and most recently Taiwan and Japan. He is the regular saxophonist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and has recorded eight compact discs with the Cincinnati Symphony and Cincinnati Pops. Bunte has performed with the Minnesota Orchestra, Lyrique en Mer Orchestra (France), Dayton Philharmonic, and the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra. Dr Bunte is a Yamaha and Vandoren endorsing artist.

Rick VanMatre is Adjunct Professor of Saxophone and Professor Emeritus of Jazz Studies at the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. In addition to jazz performances, recitals, and educational presentations in the US, Europe, Israel, China, and Brazil, concerts and recordings have included unique multimedia works and diverse artists such as Tim Hagans, Roland Vazquez, Duke Ellington Orchestra, and Cincinnati Pops Orchestra. He has appeared with James Conlon's Linton Series, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, and as concerto soloist with the New York Repertory Orchestra. Mr VanMatre is an endorsing artist for Selmer Saxophones.

From Heaven to Earth - Kim Pensyl

From Heaven to Earth is a work for Soprano Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, and Organ or Piano commissioned by the Bunte/VanMatre Duo to be premiered at the World Saxophone Congress XVI. Composer Kim Pensyl utilizes elements of contemporary classical harmony and structural forms, avant-garde jazz techniques, and improvisation, to powerfully symbolize themes of transformation inherent in various spiritual traditions.
