Evan Smith (Video non authorized)

A versatile saxophonist, Evan holds degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and James Madison University. Currently a DMA student at the University of Washington in Seattle, Evan continues to perform actively across a number of stylistic genres. While in Iowa, he appeared with numerous different groups, including UNI Jazz Band One, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony Orchestra, and the Cedar Rapids Theatre. Additionally, his quartet appeared as a semifinalist at the 2007 Plowman Chamber Music Competition. In 2010, he participated in the New England Saxophone Symposium with his quartet, and won the JMU Concerto Competition in 2011, performing Glazunov's Concerto in Eb with the university symphony. Before moving to Virginia, Evan spent a semester teaching music at Colegio Internacional de Caracas in Venezuela, and spent three summers teaching saxophone, improvisation, and jazz history as an assistant director for the Celebration Iowa Jazz Band at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

A toi, cometé vagabonde - Jonathan Schwabe

The title is taken from a mid-19th century French poem by Charles Cros, the line "For you wandering comet". The piece moves features lively interplay between the two parts, contrasted with lyrical, melodic statements.

Rhapsodies - Andrew Haile Austin

Commissioned after hearing a series of clarinet melodies by the composer, this work features a theme and variations approach to the initial melody, and includes short interludes of improvisation.
