Klang par2

Diane Hunger saxophone
Prof. Dr Wildy Zumwalt saxophone

from Germany

The German word Klang refers to sound and hints at the unique quality and enormous range of tone colors (klangfarben) inherent in the saxophone. Par2 is a reference to the ubiquitous presence of the saxophone in world culture. It also suggests a pair of instruments and artists on equal footing, while making a subtle nod to the parabolic design of the inventor Adolphe Sax (1814-1894).

KLANG PAR2 is committed to the expansion of dynamic new works for two saxophones as well as rediscovering and rendering music from the past.

The Duo was formed in 2009 by Wildy Zumwalt and Diane Hunger.

Wildy Zumwalt is an active performer, teacher and scholar of the saxophone. He is currently professor of saxophone at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

Diane Hunger is presently pursuing her Doctorate of Musical Arts at the Eastman School of Music with Chien-Kwan Lin, while serving as his teaching assistant, and a Certificate in Arts Leadership. Additionally she is an Adjunct Instructor for Saxophone at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

KLANG PAR2 recently performed a series of concerts in Germany and the Netherlands. Additionally they performed and taught at the 7th International Saxophone Festival in Poland. They were featured at the International Alliance of Women in Music conference in Flagstaff, Arizona and the conference of the North American Saxophone Alliance in West Point, NY in 2011.

Duo for saxophone (dedicated to Klang par2) - Amos Gillespie

i. Playful, but aggressive
ii. Broadly, with rubato - Quick, light - Aggressively

In this piece, while there may exist influences from America's iconic jazz and folk traditions, those influences are not placed there because this is a work for saxophones, nor are the jazz and folk influences meant to be derived exclusively from the United States. The challenge that many modern composer's face is how to fathom the globalized multi-cultured sensibilities of the modern ear. Musical experiences from every culture on the planet are being communicated through the advent of the Age of information and technology. Musician/composers such as myself will attempt to synthesize those sounds in absolute (non-programatic) works such as this one for Klang Par 2. This piece simply reflects my time, this age, you may hear influences from: jazz, popular music, folk or world folk, feature film and television, traditional classical, modern classical, contemporary classical and perhaps even French impression. The ultimate goal in this piece, as it is with most, is to fuse these musical influences in to one unique and cohesive sound. Amos Gillespie.
