Martin Proscia

from Argentina

Born in Buenos Aires in 1983, Martin Proscia holds a Bachelor of Electroacoustic Composition from the National University of Quilmes (UNQ), a Degree in Composition from "Manuel de Falla" Conservatory, and a Degree in Saxophone from the Conservatory of Music "Alberto Ginastera". He studied saxophone with Daniel Martino and had lessons and masterclasses with Arno Bornkamp, Antonio Felipe Belijar and Diego Nuñez. Currently he is a PhD student at UNQ, and his research is focused on saxophone multiphonics and its application to musical composition.

As a saxophone player and performer, his activity is centred in all possible fields of contemporary music: soloist, saxophone quartet, electroacustic music, among others. He frequently works as a guest musician with the Ensamble Nacional del Sur conducted by Oscar Edelstein. He also works with different chamber contemporary music ensembles. Since 2005 he has performed as a duo with the pianist César Vernieri in which they play their own compositions and with whom he has recorded their first CD "23 Amaneceres" in 2007. Proscia also performs free-improvising music and free jazz with different groups.

As a composer, he has written pieces for all kind of ensembles, including electroacoustic, which have been played in Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, France and Italy.

Prelude to a Bandoneon I - Martin Proscia

Unwitting witness of that half of loneliness which the port of Buenos Aires is, the bandoneon has accompanied and transformed the culture of the city from the beginning. This series of pieces is an attempt to take a look at the bandoneon (its breathing, its voice, maybe its aura too?) through the saxophone.

Prelude to a Bandoneon II - Martin Proscia

The first piece is essentially focused on the bandoneon's 'gestuality', starting with rhythmic, melodic and discursive projections based on its traditional musical materials. This second piece deepens the work on the harmonies derived from the saxophone's multiphonics and its relationship with the bandoneon's tango chords.

Prelude to a Bandoneon III - Martín Proscia

This third piece, which will be premiered in the WSCXVI, continues with the research of the previous pieces related to multiphonics tones but it makes special emphasis on melodic development.
