Polaris Duo (Video non authorized)

Gillian Blair Saxophone
Elinor Nicholson Harp

from UK

Gillian Blair (saxophone) and Elinor Nicholson (harp) met when they began studying on the Bachelor of Music Performance Course at the Royal Northern College of Music in 2010. They formed the Polaris Duo in May 2011 and have since been exploring an eclectic range of repertoire and possibilities for this unusual instrumentation.

Aside from performances in the duo, Gillian and Elinor each perform with a variety of ensembles including the RNCM Symphony, Wind, Chamber and Concert Orchestras, the Borealis Saxophone Quartet and the National Youth Orchestra of Scotland, and have both performed in the acclaimed RNCM Chamber Music Festival.

The Polaris Duo are dedicated to presenting new music and expanding the repertoire for this uncommon pairing of instruments. They have been working closely with several composers on new works and are delighted that they will be giving UK, European and World premieres of a number of pieces during 2012 and will be performing throughout the UK.

This event is a premiere

Song Without Words - Rob Buckland

...something like a paper boat, slowly spinning on a stream dappled in summer sunlight...something like a thought, a fleeting memory, a glimpse of a feeling of some long forgotten smile...something like a song once heard, the melody just beyond reach...like a word or a sound or a sigh that cannot be captured in words alone...as the paper boat drifts, fading from view, leaving just a memory, a feeling, and oh-so-wistful feeling that just for now, right now, all is calm and all is well...until all that remains is the something...the unreachable, untouchable yet unforgettable something...something like a song without words...

Sonata for Saxophone and Harp - Andy Scott

This three movement sonata, which was originally written for Flute and Harp, is influenced by Eastern European folk rhythms and jazz harmony. The writing calls for special effects and timbres, including using the harp as a percussion instrument to create rhythmic intensity. Movements one and three are thematically linked, whilst the second movement stands on its own.
