from Germany

Through their different musical backgrounds, Steffen Hass (soprano), Elmar Frey (alto), Volker Ax (tenor) and Noah Bedrin (baritone) come together to form a well-balanced and homogeneous unity. They studied at various universities and colleges in the USA, the Netherlands and Germany. Additionally, they have appeared in the leading orchestras throughout Germany, such as Gürzenich Orchester, Cologne, Orchestra of the Beethovenhalle, Bonn, Bochum Symphony, Orchestra of the Staatstheater, Darmstadt, Freiburg Philharmonic, as well as with radio orchestras such as Südwestfunk, Sender Freies Berlin, Radio Orchestra Cologne, and the West German Radio Big Band.

Founded in 1994, Tetraphonics has premiered compositions dedicated to the quartet, among them works by Christian Banasik, Michael Denhoff, Willy Giefer, Enjott Schneider, Stefan Thomas and Frank Zabel. Tetraphonics interprets original compositions of the 20th and 21st century, such as works by I. Xenakis, T. Keuris, Ph. Glass, in addition to works of the classical quartet repertoire, such as compositions by Glazunov, Bozza, Desenclos, etc., as well as selected transcriptions and adaptions of swing, jazz and latin, by Gershwin, Weill, Bernstein and Piazolla. Attempting to explore the saxophone's almost unlimited possibilities, Tetraphonics has engaged in projects of quartet music with dance, recitations and music theatre.

Saxophone Quartet - Charles Wuorinen

Charles Wuorinen's Saxophone Quartet is a prime example of the "maximalist" approach heard throughout his numerous compositions: strident, forceful sound-masses juxtaposed with strikingly beautiful, simple melodies. The one movement work is constructed of many sonic events, seemingly random but form a progressively excited unity that leads toward a dramatic conclusion.

Fugue No. 20 in A Minor (BWV 865) - Johann Sebastian Bach arr. Steffen Hass

The fugues of J.S. Bach are a well of creativity combined with powerful melody. Bach's repertoire has perhaps been more often transcribed than any other, and the homogeneous sound of the saxophone quartet is ideally suited. Originally a pedagogical tool, these works also provide a worthy challenge for four saxophonists.
