The Trio Bel Canto was formed in 1989 to establish the alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and piano as a viable classical music ensemble. It is the first professional ensemble of its kind and the wind equivalent of the traditional piano trio. Members of the trio include Patrick Meighan, (Florida State University), John S Moore (Indiana University Southeast), and Krista Wallace-Boaz (University of Louisville/Kentucky). The Trio Bel Canto regularly performs the music of Beethoven, Bernstein, Bridge, Bruch, Chopin, Ewazen, Gershwin, Mozart, Piazzolla, Poulenc and Vivaldi, in addition to over twenty-five original compositions written expressly for the ensemble. Numerous American and European composers have contributed to the repertoire of the Trio Bel Canto and have found their works performed throughout the United States and abroad. Since its inception, the Trio Bel Canto has performed at numerous conferences of The North American Saxophone Alliance and The World Saxophone Congress, successfully toured Australia (Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney, and Perth), earned a bronze medal at the First International Chamber Music Competition and Festa in Osaka, Japan in 1993 - one of 38 invited ensembles from 12 countries - and participated in festivals in Kosovo, Puerto Rico, and throughout the United States.

Reflections and Currents - Peter Lieuwen

Reflections was premiered in Comstock Concert Hall at The University of Louisville School of Music on November 18, 2011. It is the companion piece to Currents, which was first performed in Opperman Hall at the Florida State University Festival of New Music in January 27, 2011. Reflections and Currents was composed for The Trio Bel Canto and showcase the neo-impressionistic harmony, rhythmic vitality, and deft melodic suppleness of the gifted composer Peter Lieuwen.
