Yorkshire Saxophone Choir was the first independent 12 piece saxophone choir in the UK and, to our knowledge, remains the only such ensemble. The group was formed in 2001 and comprises saxophonists from across the Yorkshire region. It performs as a chamber ensemble, with a wide repertoire including classical, jazz, pop, contemporary and world music, and has commissioned a significant number of new works and arrangements.

Yorkshire Saxophone Choir performs mainly across Yorkshire and occasionally as far afield as Wales. Its first CD "Sax for Twelve" was released in 2009, comprising a range of original works and arrangements for 12 parts. The ensemble celebrated its first decade last year with a concert featuring two world premieres and a UK premiere, as well as the Ibert Concertino da Camera with the internationally renowned saxophonist and the group's musical director, Sarah Markham, as soloist.

Yorkshire Saxophone Choir also performs as a 10, 11 or 8 piece ensemble, and will feature a ten piece line-up for the World Saxophone Congress in a programme showcasing the work of contemporary British composers. Yorkshire Saxophone Choir is going from strength to strength and looking forward to many more highlights in its second decade.

El Torneo - Paul Harvey

i. Entry of the Knights
ii. The Joust
iii. Lament for the Wounded
iv.Triumph of the Victors

This programmatic suite composed in 1976 paints a sound picture of the various stages of a mediaeval joust. The four movements are Entrada de los Caballeros (The entry of the knights), La Justa (The joust), Lamento para los Heridos (Lament for the wounded), and Triunfo de los Vencedores (Triumph of the victors).

Closure - Keiron Anderson

Originally composed for brass ensemble, this thoughtful and thought provoking work from 2007 explores the industrialisation of Yorkshire. Seen from the viewpoint of a former miner, it reflects on the conflicting thoughts and emotions experienced while looking out over the changed South Yorkshire landscape. It was arranged for saxophone choir in 2008.

E-Type Jig - Chris Gumbley

This lively rhythmic dance provides a foot-tapping finale to our programme. Published by the composer's own company Gumbles, a saxophone quartet version also exists. Featuring alternating time signatures, the piece has an immediate appeal and promises to leave audience and performers alike full of the feelgood factor!

Zut! for Saxophone and Piano - Andriy Talpash

Zut! (2009) by Canadian composer Andriy Talpash typifies the incoherent ramblings of Mr. Z. Invariably, he babbles to himself incessantly, curses disjointedly, and rambles continuously at an alarming rate. The streaming outbursts are occasionally broken by brief silences, only enough time to take a breath before?.Zut! [Andriy Talpash].

Smoke and Mirrors (Symbia II) for Solo Alto Saxophone - John M Kennedy

Smoke and Mirrors (Symbia II) for Solo Alto Saxophone (1995) composed by American John Kennedy has two ideas that work separately and individually. "As you will see from the performer's opening remarks I often use words to describe portions of the piece in a way that resembles the form. I think it works nicely with the proper inflection". [John M. Kennedy].

Tour de France for Alto Saxophone & Piano (excerpts) - Alfred Joel Fisher

iii. Carpentras
iv. Monsieur Le Mignon Minime

Tour de France (1990) by Alfred Joel Fisher is a set of four movements of which movements three and four are presented in today's concert. Alfred Fisher began his career trying purposefully to avoid "looking" back and has said that it used to be easy for him to define his music in technical or compositional terms. That has become more difficult, he says, now that his music has matured. Fisher's music is rooted in communication with its audience and strives to maintain a freedom to find the right mode of expression, while "respecting the listener," he has said. His cheerful and occasionally rather tongue in cheek Tour de France is named, not for the famous yearly bicycle race, but for a tour Fisher himself took in the Fall of 1989. As France was the country in which the saxophone first found "legitimacy," Fisher said, he scored this work for alto saxophone and piano. "The final movement Le Petit Mignon brings the work to a truncated, breathless (figuratively and literally) conclusion," Fisher has stated. The third movement, however, is again in Fisher's words, "mine, wholly mine." Written in homage to the city of Carpentras, Fisher's own words suggest the music. "It is surrounded by hills covered in myrrh and lavender. I will not forget Carpentras." Crisscross-Break through the Darkness - Ya-Ming Hsu

Crisscross- Break through the Darkness / Ya-Ming Hsu This work is a dialogue between saxophones and electronic music. The composer tries to convey a common experience of facing temptation and a power of breaking through this chaotic world. The overall style is improvisational. The beginning section is a saxophone solo and expresses the conflict and distortion from the heart. The electronic music represents temptation from the world. Sometimes it interacts with sax in an ultimate and concordance balance, but sometimes in a conflict and isolated world. The place of crisscross is where a survival heart is. Ya-Ming Hsu is one of the most representative composers to come from Taiwan in recent years. His music and compositions have been widely studied and performed around the world, such as Paris, New York, Germany, Vienna, Hong Kong, Singapore and China. . He is also the core member of ISCM, Asian Composer's League and the board member of Taiwan Association of Arts and Humanity, Taiwan Classical Music Society.
