Jean-Denis Michat

from France

A versatile musician, Jean-Denis Michat graduated from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris where he took specialized classes in Saxophone, Composition, Analysis, Music History and New Technologies.

At the age of 24, he was appointed Saxophone Professor at the Conservatoire National de Région de Lyon and promoted one year later to Assistant Professor at the C.N.S.M.P. Students now come from Asia, the USA and every country in Europe to attend his "third cycle class" at the Lyon Conservatory.

As a concert performer, he is recognised for the quality of his work on the transcriptions of classical works, as well with piano and with orchestra. His compositions are played by the Orchestre National du capitole de Toulouse, Orchestre national de la musique de l'air, ensemble Itinéraire, Calliope choir and others. One of his recent works "Massive Haka" for sax ensemble and percussion is already a hit. His next piece, for sax quartet and clarinet improviser will be performed by the klezmer clarinetist David Krakauer and the Habanera quartet.

Shams - Jean-Denis Michat

This concerto in its original form was commissioned by the Habanera Academy for the 120th birthday of the French composer Jacques Ibert. The instrumentation and the form are exactly the same as the famous 'Concertino da Camera'. I'd like to present here the saxophone and tape version which will be available as playback for people who wish to get the score from my publisher's website. This "virtual orchestra project" will now accompany all my collection. "Shams" is "sun" in arabic.
