Johannes Thorell

from Sweden

Johannes Thorell, born in 1976, is one of Scandinavia´s leading saxophonists. He made his soloist debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2002 performing the hugely demanding saxophone concerto by Edison Denisov, a performance that was given a rousing reception by both press and audience. Since then Thorell has received numerous prizes and grants, including a first prize in the Wolfgang Jacobi competition in Munich together with pianist Magnus Sköld, the winner of the Rosenborg/Gehrmans grant. He has also received major grants from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee and was a prize winner at the Biel/Bienne competition for contemporary music. Johannes, together with colleague Claus Olesen, is the founder of the Scandinavian Saxophone Festival, he is also editor for the Nordic Saxophone Journal and has his own chamber music series "Örebro Live". Thorell is currently saxophone teacher at The Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus/Aalborg and performs regularly with pianist Magnus Sköld, Swedish Wind Ensemble and the Nordic Saxophone Quartet. Johannes has studied at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm as well as the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and has been taught by saxophonists Leif Jonsson, Christer Johnsson and Arno Bornkamp amongst others.

Far North - Mattias Sköld

Far North started as the electronic soundtrack for a short film by art group Raketa for Gothenburg International Film Festival 2009. I subsequently developed the music into a live performance for saxophone, electronics and Raketa's film, which is abstract, and deals with water in different ways. Images from the far north of Sweden, a landscape dressed in snow, are mixed with images from Venice, a city that breathes water.!

Libra - Marcus Wille?n

LIBRA (2010) for soprano saxophone, composed by the Swedish composer Marcus Wille?n (b. 1972), has a wavelike structure inspired by the title (lat. 'Balance' - the seventh sign of the zodiac) Gradually, the dramatic opening resolves itself into stagnation and calmness.
