from France

Founded in 1994, the Quatuor Apollinaire's core repertoire is that of the entre deux siècles in France; the late 19th century and the early 20th century. The ensemble is equally engaged in the commission of new works, wishing to enrich the literature for this unusual instrumental ensemble.

Guaillaume Apollinaire (1880 - 1918) symbolizes the turbulent and creative art of a troubled period, when all forms of art, science, and society were possible and often explored. An immense poet, with profound and multiple ramifications (visual arts, music, theatre), including artistic collaborations (Picasso) and his own origins, this "explorer of new horizons" has inspired the musicians of this ensemble concerning their desire to discover and to bring light upon a little-known repertoire of the past which merits our attention once again.

The quartet's repertoire includes original works by J. Nin, H. Sauget, H. Villa-Lobos, F. Schmitt, A. Caplet, C. Koechlin, as well as transcriptions of works by C. Debussy, M. Ravel, J. Ibert, A. Honneger, G. Gershwin, and L.E. Colburn. Their close collaborations with talented composers (Marylin Shrude, Robert Lemay, Pascale Jakubowski, Etienne Rolin, Claudio Gabriele, Suguru Goto, Marie-Hélène Fournier, Philippe Dulat, Rico Gubler) have led to numerous new works for this instrumentation. They have been heard in numerous festivals in France, Italy (Pesaro, Ostra-Vetere), the United States (Pittsburg, Minneapolis, Bismark, Chicago, Boston, Bowling Green) and Canada (Edmonton, Winnpeg, Victoria, Montreal), Mexico, Israel, and Spain, during recitals as well as masterclasses in several North-American universities.

La rose de Hildesheim - Claudio Gabriele

La Rose de Hildesheim was written in 2006, commissioned by and dedicated to the Quatuor Apollinaire - it is a chamber composition, but also a kind of musical theatre with some text fragments taken from a poem and a tale of the French writer Guillaume Apollinaire. The story tells of a young woman living in the city, a lover of luxury, cars, smart clothes, nightclubs. In parallel the story tells of a young and naive innocent girl, who lives in the countryside, who suffers from an unrequited love for a young boy, and finally dies.
