Mr Carlos Lopez-Real
Carlos Lopez-Real is professor of Contemporary Jazz, and Saxophone, at The Guildhall School of Music, and has been a visiting tutor at The Royal Academy of Music, The Royal College of Music and Leeds College of Music. He teaches saxophone at The Purcell School and has led masterclasses as far afield as Bulgaria and Hong Kong.
His series of play-along books is published by Spartan Press and he is working on a book about learning jazz improvisation through transcription. He is also researching communication within jazz, and how this can be taught.
Carlos runs a quintet, 'Mandorla', which released its debut CD in 2009, touring the UK extensively; a quartet with singer Fini Bearman (featuring Carlos's settings of poems by Carol Ann Duffy); and a duo with Brigitte Beraha involving live looping and sound processing.
He has played on dozens of albums, such as Justin Quinn's award-winning 'Bakehouse'. He has collaborated with Zoe Rahman, and featured with US salsa legend Machito jnr, most recently on BBC TV.
